Anyone care to say when the 32-bit Sierra Drivers are coming out?
Gabriel KNight under windows doesn't like my video card, and keeps locking.
Or, since I have a MPU-IPC-T card hooked up to a GM synth, just away to get
16-bit digital audio out of it.
Also, is there a way to take advantage of the 'Sound Mapper' that installs
itself when ytou install the VFW 1.1 runtime?

Hi all. I just tried the 3d demo that came in gus0038 (which I finally
managed to download), and all it does is put "Entering interactive mode..."
on the screen and the freeze the computer. Does it require VGA? I
still have Hercules on my 386 (:-) and sometimes VGA programs will freeze
it up...

I downloaded the program that claims to update the GUS to
67 khz. The whole program sounds like a scam since it claims
to change the internal memory of the Ultrasound's main processor.
After setting up my virus protection software, I decided to try it.
I ran the program, and all I got was a message claiming that the
program could not find the GUS card. There was no damage to the GUS
and I have since erased the program from my drive.

Subject: [GUS] .INI files and Patches! (TREMSTR.PAT)
I upgraded to 3.1 as soon as it came out. However, i only today
upgraded the 2.06 to 2.06a (i wanted the tremstr.pat!) So my
question being this, in ULTRAMID.INI a long time ago, i took out
the tremstr and changed it to marcato. So, logicly I changed my
ultrasnd.ini and ultramid.ini patches 44 back to tremstr since i
didn't like having to duplicate the marcato patch (since in both
files it is also listed as patch 48) (see below)
so far this is all making sense right? (course no one told me to
do it this way..it's all logical thinking up to here)
But what happens when i look at the default.cfg in the midi
directry? Now this is where i get hung up! listed below the .ini
files is one of the first lines from the .cfg file which states
that tremstr is now #45! if you notice, the patches listed in
default.cfg are all one number off from the ones in the ini files.
so should i change any of this? or is this the way it's supposed to
be..and WHY??

Can anyone in the UK get 44256 or equivalent DRAM chips without going

It appears that several manufacturers have stopped producing them &
left all us UK GUSsers in the lecherous money grabbing hands of RS (who
charge 7.5 pounds each excluding VAT)
Help anyone I need DRAM, but not that desperately.
What do US/European companies charge to ship to UK ???

Hey there!
I am also having problems with Playfile...only I get locked up
after I record an SND file (I can't record WAV files...I get the
error message too)
MODUS doesn't work for certain MOD files. It shuts down and
kicks me out of windows...(not that I mind exiting windows).
I am also having problems getting the Gravis.exe demo to work.
I'll try loading the playfile program first but I can't see why that
would let it work. (BTW ... the demo worked with old gravis software)
Other than that...I am pretty pleased with the new stuff. I like
the 3D demos.
Anybody know why the SETGUS.EXE program doesn't work with this
new version?
What about those 4 new patches...I wanna use them in my windows
MIDI composers...how do I do that? I can only hear them when I load
the new MIDI songs with playmidi.
Oh well..that's all.

Best way I think is to run the LINE out of the GUS to the line in on the
SBPro. Make sure your SBPro mixer is set, or you won't hear a thing. I think
this is a better arrangement than vice-versa because you can control the GUS
volume using the line in portion of the mixer on the Pro (The Pro's mixer
is notoriously versatile). Now run the SBPro out to your stereo or speakers
or whatever. I've been doing this for about a year now with no problems.
Good luck!

NOTE: If your want a quick answer, skip to the end of my message.
The outputs of the GUS *always* change at 44100 Hz.
If your data were sampled at 11025 Hz and you tell the GUS to play it back
at 11025 Hz, the GUS will interpolate extra samples between each "real"
sample (on the fly) so that it can play the real samples plus the
interpolated samples at 44100 Hz while still maintaining the proper pitch of
your recording. (whew, that's quite a sentence!) In this case the
"interpolation interval" is one fourth (11025/44100 = 1/4) of the sample
interval.
If your data were sampled at a higher sample rate (like 67 kHz) and you tell
the GUS to play it back at 67 kHz, the interpolation interval is
approximately one and a half times the sample interval. In this case, with
the interpolation interval greater than 1, the GUS will actually skip some
"real" samples and interpolate between the remaining "real" samples so that
it can play the remaining "real" samples plus the interpolated samples at
44100 Hz while still maintaining the proper pitch of your recording.
The GUS actually uses this property to play back interleaved stereo.
Imagine you have an interleaved stereo recording that was sampled at 22050
Hz. You tell the GUS to start voice 0 on sample 0, play it at 44100 Hz, and
pan it all to the left. You also tell the GUS to start voice 1 on sample 1,
play it at 44100 Hz, and pan it all the way to the right. The interpolation
interval will be exactly 2, so each voice will play every other sample.
Voice 0 will play the even numbered (i.e. left) samples and voice 1 will
play the odd numbered (i.e. right) samples. There are a very limited number
of sampple rates at which interleaved stereo can work with the GUS. They
are 11025 Hz (playback at 22050 Hz), 22050 Hz (playback at 44100 Hz), and
44100 Hz (playback at 88200 Hz). I'm not sure about the last one, 88200 Hz
may be beyond the range of the GUS.
So, to finally answer your questions, I have not seen this program, but if
it is legitimate (i.e. it works and is not a virus), it will not damage your
GUS. It will not update the memory on the GUS. It absolutely will not
reprogram any EEPROMs on the GUS (there are none!). It will set registers
on the GF1 chip (the big square chip that does most of the work) to atypical
values to acheive its effect, but these settings will be overwritten by the
next GUS program that you run.
All in all, (assuming it's not a virus) I would call it harmless and mildly
amusing (for about the first 5 minutes).

Subject: GUS sound in Windows 3.1
After getting gus0038.zip and installing the new windows drivers I have
come upon a new problem. When I start up windows the startup .wav plays
fine, but if I go to play any .wav or .mid file manually (eg. media
player) Windows tells me that the device (sound) is already in use even
though there's nothing else open. Has anyone else had this problem?
I figured out a temporary patch though... I go to control panel, select
the sound menu item, then "test" any of the system sounds. After that
everything works fine... weird huh?
Also, I'm using RIPbar v1.6 rather than Program Manager for my Windows
shell. Don't know why that would affect my sound device though.
Thanks for any help in advance... (either post here, or e-mail me directly)

Subject: Many questions
I have a lot of questions:
1) I just installed gus0038 on my system, and now when I load windows,
it boots me back out to DOS. I thought this was because of tcp drivers
I loaded, so I tried just running win.com. Okay, I got into windows
then, realizing the problem was now with the drivers. Wrong. As it
happens, whenever I boot dos, windows will boot me the FIRST time I try
to load it. The second time (and thereafter) it is just fine. Now I
will admit that I was foolish enough to try to install the gus0038
drivers from within windows, causing a system crash, but it seems to me
that the real problems would be somewhere with the drivers. Any help on
this?
2) I tried running MODUS under windows after installing gus0038, (so it
was the ver. 1.5) and it slows down very easily--like when I play with
Dashboard or load stuff. I ran a cpu meter, and it says my cpu is 30%
full or so when running modus. I figured this was the windows code, so
minimized it, with no change. I thought MODUS was supposed to be an
efficient GUS player! Do I have something configured wrong?
3) Does anyone have Doom 1.1 registered? A friend of mine is
experiencing problems because, even with using IRQ 5 (which worked for
the first unregistered doom), there is still no digital sound, only
weird noises when the guns are fired. It sounds like midi instruments
are being substituted or something--is this a known problem?
4) I need some specifics on the Gravis Ultrasound for business
purposes. Can anyone tell me:
Whether the Ultrasound can play and record simultaneously
Whether the Ultrasound can use 16-bit DMA
Where one can find low-level programming information other than the sdk
Ordering address and phone # for Gravis
A technical contact (again, phone #) at Gravis
None of the information should be dos-dependent, as this is for a different OS.

Subject: Rebel Assault with GUS and more...
I've bought Rebel Assault mainly because it claimed to have UltraSound
support.... oh boy, WHAT a support! The guys filled up the CD with 400 MB
of digitized sound (so this is why they could say in the box: "Soundtrack
by John Williams as performed by the London Symphony Orchestra") - how can
I feel the GUS "superiority" with no MIDI music?? Anyway, it's a great
shoot 'em up game with beautiful movie sequences. The problem is that setting
the game for GUS makes it run slower than with my SBPro (shouldn't it to
be the other way??! :-) ) and the speeches get simply awfull. Anybody with
a similar problem?
Now this has nothing to do with the GUS itself, but here comes the
interesting part. When I run the game, the most weird problems occur with
apparently no logic... sometimes it just doesn't run and give me an
"Unexpected interrupt 0C" error; or it runs and hangs up at some random
point of the game. I've tried with no QEMM and no SmartDrv but nothing helps.
The funny thing is that if I run it from a *Windows DOS prompt* it goes ok,
or almost :-o Actually, this is the only way I've been able to play it in the
last few days...
I remember a similar problem with a demo program that came with my SBPro
called Tetra Demo. It is a MOD player that I could only run from a Windows
DOS session. Note that both programs I referred are NOT for Windows and
actually strongly recommend that you don't run them from Windows. Isn't it
REAL strange??
I recently read in a GUS FAQ about the problems with OPTi chipsets (which
would have problems in the DMA controllers). Since my computer does use the
OPTi chipset, I suspect that this could be the reason of all my problems.
I wonder what does Windows do that solves the problem. Any opinion?
Thanks,
Snoopy.

I'm not sure it's safe to feed the SBPro's output into the GUS'
line out. To get the line in to work, you must use both the -l
and -o switches with ultrinit. The -l switch turns the line in on,
and the -o switch turns the GUS' output on.
> p.s. Is there any difference between routing the SBPRO through the GUS, or vice
> versa? I mean, does one way produce less noise, or are they about equal?

If you feed the GUS' output into the SBPro, then you'll always get the SBPro's
noise mixed in with the GUS' sound. If you do it the other way around,
you have the option of turning off the line in when you don't want the
SBPro's noise to contaminate the GUS' output.

Subject: Will Ultima 8 have Gravis UltraSound support?
To Whom It May Concern,
I am wondering if Ultima 8 (hopefully soon to be released :) will feature
support for the Gravis UltraSound sound card. The UltraSound is a high
quality card that deserves as much attention as any Roland or Creative
Labs device. It also has quite a bit of grass roots support, particularly
on the Internet.
Support is also relatively easy to add through the use of the 32 bit AIL
drivers (16 bit AIL drivers were utilized in previous Ultimas, although
no GUS drivers were included).
Not including support will leave 15,000 or more potential users stranded
with no sound at all. My understanding is that U8 is a protected mode
program, and none of the GUS' emulation solutions will function with a
protected mode program running.
